Who Are We Really?

By Kelly Sullivan Walden, co-author of Dreaming Heaven

The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.
~Jim Morrison

Our lives are built upon stories, upon stories, upon stories, masks upon masks. We live out our lives in a personalized virtual reality equipped with billowing smoke and ornate mirrors on the stage of a grand theatre we call life. Miracles and magic are possible in every moment, yet most of us have invested our faith in stories that describe our limited perception rather than reflecting our infinite potential. But, what if we are more than the roles we play and the masks we wear?

Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players…” and in the Bible (Matthew 9:29) says, “As you believe, so it shall be done unto you.” You’d think that we would’ve gotten the message by now that we’re making our lives up as we go along, based on our beliefs and the stories we tell.

Then why, if we have a say in the matter, do we continue to play the role of victim (alternating from time to time with the role of empowered victim)? Perhaps the simple reason to this quandary is that in the acting out of these tragic tales, and in the wearing of these well-crafted masks, we’ve been drinking our own Kool-Aid and have accepted these roles as fact…when in truth they are nothing more than our own urban legends.

Most of us have never considered that we are limitless beings. Instead we relate to ourselves as one of the mere players Shakespeare mentions, or as Henry David Thoreau said, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.”

Yet, in the theatre of life—preposterous as it may seem—we are the director, producer, playwright, lead actor or actress…and even the one who controls the floodlights of our perception. If we could peek behind the backstage curtains, we would discover a great secret: We are Divine Beings dreaming the dream of our humanity.

This is the truth, this is Reality, this is What we are. We have lived life playing small and in fear for many many generations now. It is time we step up and take total responsibilty for our Lives  for our place in the natural order of life on Earth. We have to wake up!

Could there be a more important quest? I think not!

Remember, it’s your life, your story your virtual reality—dream it any way you desire. But know, from this moment forward, yours can be a dream of struggle and strife, or it can be a dream of heaven. In fact, we are choosing every day with every choice we make, whether or not we are aware of it. If you choose to explore the magic, and go on a ride of epic proportions. Congratulations! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
